Josh Berkus presents… Postgres 9

13 July 2010 - 7pm

UW Campus, Physics Building (Chamberlain Hall)

1150 University Ave Room 4274 (High Energy Physcis)

Madison, WI

Josh Berkus, President and CEO of PGX Postgres SQL Experts and a member of the PostgreSQL Core Team since 2002; provides general direction for PostgreSQL advocacy, works on performance testing, tuning and documentation, and works with user groups.

He will be in Madison, and has agreed to do a presentation on Postgres 9. Postgres is a powerful, relational database system that is open source. It competes and collaborates with MySQL.

Most people consider MySQL vs PostgreSQL when deciding on an open-source relational databases management system. Both are time-proven solutions that compete strongly with proprietary database software. The old statements of speed versus features is mostly no longer true. So come learn why PostgresSQL should be added to your arsenal of development tools.

The presentation is open to the general public.

More about Josh Berkus: Josh has been a sculptor, a potter, a pastry baker, a labor organizer, a lobbyist, a legal assistant and a professional fundraiser. He likes to think that this gives him more perspective than the average Silicon Valley geek, but he's probably kidding himself. He has lived in the Upper Haight neighborhood of San Francisco since 1993, and is unlikely to leave as long as rent contro

PAST EVENTS

madtech_opencamp_160.jpg OpenCamp combines 'Open Everything' with the unconference style of BarCamp. OpenCamp will be the first hosting event of it's kind in the world and will be part of a growing global movement with NYC holding their event the same day.

WHAT: Because "everything" is pretty broad, we're going to have four tracks to make sure interested people get enough of what that which they seek.

Those tracks will be:

CONTENT (Art, Media, Music, etc);

TECHNOLOGY (FOSS, open standards, interoperability, Accessibility);

NON-GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATIONS (Non-Profits, User Groups, etc); and

ANYTHING GOES (Education, Government, Journalism, ANYTHING ELSE)

In the spirit of the un-conference, these tracks are subject to change and there are many places where boundaries will overlap.  PLEASE DO NOT FEEL RESTRICTED BY THESE TRACKS; if we have lots of people interested in open education, open government, etc, it's fine for that to bleed into content, technology or NGOs as most appropriate.

WHERE: Madison, Wisconsin, USA.  Grainger Hall, Director's Room.  Grainger is at the corner of University and Park downtown.

WHEN: April 18th 10am-5pm (if things are going well, we may plan to go out to eat at a local sushi establishment or somewhere else)

Wisconsin joins the global conversation about art, science, and spirit of 'open'. Open Everything: A Conversation on Openness, Access and Transparency is a roundtable discussion on the current state of 'open' in the region. Participants come of an array of sectors dealing with various levels and components of 'open' issues, including: technology, education, libraries, journalism, government, philanthropy, arts, nonprofit sector, and more.

Why?
Open is a game changer. Take a look at the growing revolution around issues of transparency, collaboration, access and inclusion. Libraries and educational institutions have been working on open access and open term papers[1] collaboration issues for a longtime; but current technologies are spearhead the shape and form of openness in unprecidented ways.

When?
10am to 5pm, Saturday, 6 December 2008. Capitol Conference Room AB, Grainger Hall, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 975 University Avenue, Madison, Wisconsin.

This event is a sister event to 'Open Everything: Hong Kong' and 'Open Everything: Berlin'. Three (3) cities, three (3) countries, three (3) same day events. Join us in participating in the Global Conversation.
